Thank You Josh Fox for all the work you are doing to expose these corporate criminals running the oil and gas industry. I am in the most right-wing pro-oil developement state there is, North Dakota and they are drilling wells here as fast as they can. The polititions here won't even look at the evidence. They just love that money coming into the states coffers at a record pace. I am really worried that my immedidate enviroment and the states enviroment will be destroyed unless Federal Legislation is passed soon and a safe and sane energy policy is enacted for the future. Keep up the great work your doing! Were cheering for you here!

This has happened on just about every petition sight and it is impossible to get through. Very frustrating! I will not vote for him.

How is Greenpeace going to reconcile Duke Energy's plan to initially burn over a million tons of forests per year for "renewable energy". How will they deal with the fact that the carbon bomb, particulate, and environmental degradation will increase when burning forests for "green" energy? Inquiring minds want to know.

The American Eel is the evolutionary host for the Elliptio complanata mussel. This lasts for two months at the beginning of this life cycle which may be as long as 110 years for the mussel. The tens of thousands of miles of waterways of the Susquehanna system, which flows into the Chesapeake Bay, has been host to both the American Eel and the Elliptio mussel. The damns on the lower Susquehanna virtually cut off the migration passage of the eels from returning to this system. The Conowingo Dam has blocked passage since 1928. Surviving mussels are very old reaching their upper limits in life span. These mussels have the ability to filter up to one gallon of water an hour. Save the American Eel in the Susquehanna, thus saving the Elliptio mussel and take one step to saving the Chesapeake Bay. Extinction is forever. Act now!!!!

Although I live in NY, I have property in PA along the West Branch of the Delaware River. I shudder to think of the impacts of wide spread fracking on the River and the surrounding lands.
Government must go slow as they consider the merits of drilling.

Do the right thing and everything you can to back our President in regards to the Keystone Pipeline. And please tell Joe Manchin that we are watching his pockets, because oil money leaks and leaves horrible stains. We need him to stand up and do the right thing, too.
We are watching, and we VOTE! We don't fall for negative ads, we don't even listen to them. We're smarter than that. DO WHAT IS RIGHT, and the rest will follow. Thank you.

Holy crap, are you serious? Really, is this article and the comment before me a joke???
How about parental involvement and individual respopnsibility? Pay attention to what your kids are eating you lazy jerks!
And to invoke our Founding Fathers this way, shame on you! Of course they would have been fine with this, because this is in no way a federal matter.

Very good. The arguments and the support need to get stronger. While climate change is a flagship, we know there are many other eco issues to be concerned with. This is our fragile biosphere that we are talking about. Keep speaking up.

All Sun driven resouces are threatened by the insanity of our Gov't (and others?) by Weather Modification atmospheric acitivities producing science made atmosphere of artificial cloud haze... Our Planet's atmosphere is being deprived of sunshine. THE SUN POWERS ALL LIFE PROCESSES ON EARTH. If you live in USA, Canada or a NATO Nation, you and your family are being "bombarded" daily by Weather Modification Aviation Tankers, equipped with FAA approved delivery systems. Aluminum is one of the numerous, known/unknown, materials the planes spew. Supposedly, the Aluminum is to reflect the Sun, to keep it's intensity from our Planet. This stupidity is stopping natural process of Sun/Water evaporation to make fresh-water rain. This has been going on actively since 1997, I think that's what's causing world wide drought... Of course, Weather Modification needs to be stopped. :::

Keep in mind that an important complement to the energy reduction/efficiency/alternatives approach to solving the carbon crisis starts with photosynthesis, providing food, water regulation, species habitat, energy, building materials, and other classes of natural capital. NASA/Goddard's Dr. James Hansen, in the report that first considered 350 ppm as the maximum atmospheric CO2 level that could sustain our civilization, considered more than just emissions, and included forestry and agricultural approaches. Indeed, only reducing emissions just slows down the increase, but doesn't do much to mitigate the hundreds of gigatons of CO2 that could provide more needed life on earth in the biosphere, and in the soil as topsoil, lowering the ppm of CO2 in the process. This deserves at least as much attention as does tar sands, deep drilling, and energy policy. Turn the carbon bubble into a flowering of life. Anything else is only a half solution.

Monsanto's RoundUp Ready genetically engineered crops (soy, corn, cotton, sugarbeets and canola) are a failure, responsible for new breeds of super-weeds, millions of gallons of toxic pesticides sprayed on farm crops, and the propagation of a deadly new micro-monster that attacks plants, animals, and humans alike.
Budgets is invariably about allocation of finances to ministries for projects etc. What we all would like to see is how seriously governments take the environment and sustainability. I would like to see a green budget being an integral part of national budgets worldwide. At least we will know which are those countries taking the environment seriously and those which could not care less.

How did we ever allow this to happen? Free speech is at the core of the greatness of our country, but we have always recognized exceptions (the most obvious being a person cannot yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater when there is no fire). Free enterprise is what made our country the strongest economic force in the history of the world, but if we allow companies to profit at the expense of our health and especially the health and well being of our children, the profits earned destroy the quality of our lives.
These articles and the messages they contain are essential to our well being. Thank you Ecowatch and Waterkeeper's Alliance. I have been asleep, but thanks to you, I am waking up.

IS ANYONE PAYING ATTENTION TO THE VAST AMOUNT OF BOREAL FOREST BEING EVISCERATED TO GET AT THE TAR SANDS?? THESE FORESTS SUCK UP TREMENDOUS AMOUNTS OF CO2. CUTTING THEM DOWN TO ACCESS A FOSSIL FUEL LOADED WITH CO2 BURNS THE CANDLE AT BOTH ENDS. YOU CREATE IT AND THEN DON'T SUCK IT BACK UP. THE MERE ACT OF TAPPING INTO THE SAND BURNS FOSSIL FUEL. THEN YOU DISRUPT AND EXPOSE THE VOLATILE HYDROCARBONS PREVIOUSLY LOCKED AWAY BENEATH THE SOIL CAUSING MORE ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION. THEN YOU USE FUEL TO TRANSPORT AND REFINE THIS CRUD. THEN YOU BURN THE FINISHED PRODUCT AND OUT COMES POLLUTION FROM THE TAIL PIPE. I URGE YOU ALL TO GO TO GOOGLE SATELLITE, MOVE THE CURSOR OVER THE ATHABASCA TAR SAND AREA AND TAKE A PEAK. YOU WILL SEE A MOONSCAPE BIGGER THAN THE STATE OF OHIO. NOW, DO YOU WANT TO PLAY GAMES WITH THIS ANYMORE. WHY DON'T WE JUST CUT DOWN HALF THE AMAZON?????? SAME THING BEING DONE IN CANADA.

I believe we're all "losers" if people do not address this problem. Advocating for greener development is certainly not a selfish cause. It's for the benefit of everyone, every organism. So I suggest that instead of scoffing at the "adequacy and timing" of ecological innovations, you help support their cause not just for them or even for the earth but--if it's a better incentive-- for yourself.

I believe we're all "losers" if people don't address this problem. Advocating for a greener future is most certainly not a selfish cause. It's not just for the benefit of humans, but for many organisms. So I sugget you not sit back and scoff at ecological activists, but try helping them (and hence yourself) instead.

Dear Prime Minister Harper,
Please be a good neighbor and think long-term about the consequences of your actions. Tar sands oil extraction will perform far more harm than good, and the amount of energy and resources required to extract the stuff should quickly negate the idea. I've long looked to Canada with appreciation for its vast protected tracts of forest and abundant wildlife. These spaces left intact are far more precious than any short-term financial gain their destruction may bring. Future generations will appreciate greatly your decision to forego these activities and protect your remaining wild places. Poisoning and killing wolves will in turn threaten the entire ecosystem up there. Wolves are an apex predator, a keystone species whose well-being dictates the health and prosperity of the entire natural system around it. Once you've destroyed the wolf, the rest will follow. All you need to do is look to what the U.S. did through the early 1930s. And then look at what has been accomplished in Yellowstone National Park as a result of wolf reintroduction. Truly remarkable. That is something that more dirty oil certainly is not.
Thank you for not destroying your true valuables in Canada. Upon your decision rides my choice to travel to Canada in the future...
In good conscience,
Nelson Brooke

An old issue on the Delaware. The questionable economic prosperity for a few of the top feeders in reality vs potential specie extinction and long term if not permanent environmental and economic harm. The additional concern should also be where is all that contaminated and toxic sediment going? Pennsylvania is short on cleaning up thousands of toxic super fund sites as it is. Current Pennsylvania environmental policies and governmental leadership is continuing future generations to a dismal environmental future. We can only change this by standing for the air, land, water and our children with our vote , process of the law and our unified voice. Senators Casey and Toomey have proven themselves unworthy of the public sector again and most always. Do your part, make yourself heard and help clean up this keystone state by removing Senator Bob Casey, Senator Pat Toomey, Governor Tom Corbett and Congressman Glenn Thompson for a start. Our state, our health, our children are too important to be continually tainted by politics. Your voice and vote matters. Support your Delaware Riverkeeper!

The World Bank estimates that forcible “development-induced displacement and resettlement” now affects 10 million people per year. According to the World Bank an estimated 33 million people have been displaced by development projects such as dams, urban development and irrigation canals in India alone.
India is well ahead in this respect. A country with as many as over 3600 large dams within its belt can never be the exceptional case regarding displacement. The number of development induced displacement is higher than the conflict induced displacement in India. According to Bogumil Terminski an estimated more than 10 million people have been displaced by development each year.
Athough the exact number of development-induced displaced people (DIDPs) is difficult to know, estimates are that in the last decade 90–100 million people have been displaced by urban, irrigation and power projects alone, with the number of people displaced by urban development becoming greater than those displaced by large infrastructure projects (such as dams). DIDPs outnumber refugees, with the added problem that their plight is often more concealed.
This is what experts have termed “development-induced displacement.” According to Michael Cernea, a World Bank analyst, the causes of development-induced displacement include water supply (dams, reservoirs, irrigation); urban infrastructure; transportation (roads, highways, canals); energy (mining, power plants, oil exploration and extraction, pipelines); agricultural expansion; parks and forest reserves; and population redistribution schemes.

I STARTED IN THE OIL & GAS EXPLORATION BUSINESS IN 1948 AND WAS ACTIVE THERE UNTIL 1987 AND I WAS EXPLORATION MANAGER FOR VANDERBILT ENERGY WHEN WE DRILLED OIL WELLS IN ALBERTA, CANADA, JUST BEFORE THEY SENT ALL OF USE HOME. SO I DO KNOW LITTLE ABOUT CANADA'S SHARE OF THE WILLISON BASIN AND WILL HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT ONE OR TWO PARTS OF YOUR OTHERWISE EXCELLENT ARTICLE. HOWEVER, DO YOU HAVE THE API GRAVITY % FOR WHAT YOU CALL HEAVY OIL AND FOR EXTRA HEAVY OIL AND FOR BITUMEN? IF SO, WOULD YOU PLEASE SEND THAT INFO TO ME. THANKS. ARNOLD J.
Suppressed precipitation, 2007 = “These alarming findings prompted the California Energy Commission to support cloud physics aircraft measurements of pollution aerosols and their interactions with the potential rain clouds over California. These measurements, which took place during the latter part of the winters of 2005 and 2006, confirmed that urban aerosols are ingested into potential rain clouds and suppress their precipitation (Rosenfeld, 2006). Model simulations of these processes provide additional support and insights.” ::: http://www.swhydro.arizona.edu/archive/V6_N2/
2012....Eureka CA, this is supposed to be a Temperate RAINforest; we are suffering a serious drought. We haven't had a real rain here for over a year. The sun light is blocked by the reflective haze spewed by Weather Modification Aviation Tankers, they are very active in this area and West of our Coastline.

Former FBI Chief, Ted L. Gunderson, makes a statement regarding the chemtrail "death dumps", otherwise know as air crap, on January 12, 2011. Ted says the following: "The death dumps, otherwise known as chemical trails, are being dropped and sprayed throughout the United States and England, Scotland, Ireland, and Northern Europe. I have personally seen them not only in the United States, but in Mexico and in Canada. Birds are dying around the world. Fish are dying by the hundreds of thousands around the world. This is genocide. This is poison. This is murder by the United Nations. This element within our society that is doing this must be stopped. I happen to know of two of the locations where the airplanes are that dump this crap on us. Four of the planes are out of the Air National Guard in Lincoln, Nebraska. And, the other planes are out of Fort Sill, Oklahoma. I personally have observed the planes that were standing still in Nebraska - Lincoln, Nebraska - at the Air National Guard. They have no markings on them. They are huge, bomber-like airplanes with no markings. This is a crime: a crime against humanity, a crime against America, a crime against the citizens of this great country. This must be stopped. ::: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gR6KVYJ73AU

As a person who lives in the middle of the gas boom, Tioga County Pa. What this has done for our economy here is amazing. We were a little tourist town with small businesses struggling to stay open. Farmers who were gonna loose there farm have walked in to banks and paid them off in full. With money in there pockets still and tears in there eyes. I fail to see how this is a lose lose for the people experiencing it. Yes there's more traffic and more people but the good has so far out weighed the bad.

You might be right that about the well I dont know. But I would bet my life that the people running these well are just like you, not worried & they are probably spilling the chemical water mixture all over the ground & then there is the injection wells that are supposed to store the used chemical mixture. I find it hard to believe that the people of Dimock PA that are living with contaminated well water after signing leases to allow Hydraulic Fracturing. It is stupid to see the side effects and turn your head. We need to be a bit more cautious, whats the rush? As far as I have been told by neighbors of mine who have signed leases the oil & gas that they find is going to be sold overseas. So much for energy independence off of foreign oil as a reason to hurry. Please, use your head.

We all have our role, but what you are doing is not doing anything but raise money for your organization and upset the people you are wanting to do a better job. If you actually use real numbers instead of generalizations you would know that ALL of the Eastern Shore of MD rivers, that also go into DE are account for only 8% of the Chesapeake Bay's inputs. Those Poultry conglomerates you mentioned are only a small part of the 8% and are improving every day. If you look at the Chesapeake Bay TMDL MD's poultry manure only accounts for 1.2% of the Bays inputs.
Now Mr. Yaggi I would like to see how you justify exactly how these evil conglomerates 1.2% is the major polluter of the Bay.

We can live without gas, but we can't live without clean water. It is pretty obvious that if you drill through rock and use toxic chemicals and water to extract gas, there is a great likelihood that the toxic chemicals will get into the ground water and poison it. And that seems to be exactly what's happening. Already, people, livestock and wildlife are getting sick near sites where hydraulic fracturing is being executed. Again, we cannot live without water, but we CAN live without gas. We can find truly clean sources of energy, but more importantly, both industry and consumers must conserve the use of energy and employ production means that are efficient and cut back on energy use. We must begin to cut back on the use of plastics and when necessary, replace the use of plastic with materials made from renewable resources.
Politicians must listen to reason. It's disgusting that oil, gas, coal and nuclear energy companies lobby Congress and get subsidized, de-regulated and are allowed to spread propaganda while reporters of integrity like Josh Fox are handcuffed for attempting to videotape a public hearing.
It's time to see the writing on the wall. We can't keep dumping toxins into our water and expect a bright future. WAKE UP CONGRESS!!! The voters are waking up, get with it!!!!

Where are the humane people to rise up and oppose this stupid idea. How can someone call themselves and Environmental Minister and support this policy.

THE REASON PROCESSED FOOD IS UNHEALTHY IS BECAUSE WE DIDN'T EVOLVE WITH IT. IF THE INGREDIENTS IN YOUR FOOD WERE NOT CONSUMED BY CAVE MAN. PUT THE POISON DOWN. CERTAINLY, DON'T EAT IT. WHAT HAPPENS IS YOUR BODY'S IMMUNE SYSTEM DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE MANUFACTURED CHEMICAL INGREDIENTS. SO, IT TREATS THEM AS ALIEN INVADERS; JUST LIKE BACTERIA. AND WHAT HAPPENS NEXT AIN'T PRETTY. YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM GETS SET OFF, GOES INTO OVERDRIVE, AND GETS SO ACTIVE, IT STARTS TO ATTACK THE BODY ITSELF. THAT IS WHY INFLAMMATION IS RAMPANT. AND THAT SETS OFF THE CORTISOL CYCLE AND THE LAST FREE RADICAL DEFENSE....URIC ACID...WHICH LEADS TO GOUT. CORTISOL IS IMPLICATED IN OBESITY. WITH JUNK FOOD, YOU CAN EAT LESS CALORIES, BUT DEPOSIT MORE FAT. ITS ALL ABOUT HORMONES AND THE IMMUNE SYSTEM. I HOPE I DIDN'T SPOIL YOUR APPETITE

THESE REEFS DON'T NEED "PROTECTION". THEY NEED "RESTORATION". MANAGEMENT ISN'T THE ISSUE. YOU CAN "MANAGE" A DEAD ZONE. YOU NEED "ACTION". NO FISHING; LET THE WHOLE ECOSYSTEM COME BACK INTO SOME SEMBLANCE OF BALANCE. RESTOCKING CORALS.
I WOULD RATHER FRAME THIS ISSUE AS CO2 POLLUTION. MOST OF WHICH IS CAUSED BY HUMAN KIND BURNING FOSSIL FUELS WHICH HAS RELEASED IN 100 YEARS, THE CARBON PRODUCED AND STORED BY NATURE OVER THE PAST 300 MILLION YEARS. CAN LIVING THINGS ADAPT TO THIS NEW LOAD OF CO2 IN SUCH A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME? THAT REMAINS TO BE SEEN. I AM SURE THERE IS MORE TO THE WARMING ASPECT: SUN VARIATIONS, SOLAR FLARES, SUN SPOT ERUPTIONS, ETC. AND DON’T FORGET THE FACT THAT THE EARTH HAS BEEN WARMING SO AS TO MELT GLACIERS THAT ONCE COVERED OHIO, A PROCESS THAT BEGAN WHEN THE ICE AGE ENDED 12,000 YEARS AGO. BUT THAT WARMING DOES NOT EXPLAIN WHY THE CORAL REEFS HAVE BASICALLY DIED OFF TO THE TUNE OF 90 PERCENT IN JUST THE PAST 20 YEARS. IF GLOBAL WARMING EXPLAINED IT, WHY DIDN’T THE CORALS DIE OFF WHEN THE EARTH BEGAN TO WARM 12,000 YEARS AGO? AFTER ALL, CORALS HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR 400 MILLION YEARS. IT IS ONLY THE RECENT GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE THAT SEEMS TO BE KILLING THE CORALS. SO, WHAT IS THE TRANSFORMATIVE FACTOR? EXCESS CO2. IT IS CAUSING ACIDIFICATION OF THE OCEANS WHICH DISSOLVE THE LIMESTONE SUBSTRATE ON WHICH CORALS BUILD. THAT EXCESS CO2 DIDNT EXIST WHEN THE ICE AGE BEGAN DYING OUT. IT HAS CAUGHT UP TO US NOW. COUPLE THAT WITH OTHER INSULTS SUCH AS DESTROYING THE FINED TUNED CORAL ECOSYSTEM WITH OVER FISHING, SILTATION, SEWAGE, NUTRIENT LOAD, TOXIC CHEMICALS, HERBICIDES, PESTICIDES, FUNGICIDES, DIOXIN, DDT, DECAYING PLASTICS, PETROLEUM SPILLS, SOLVENTS, LUBRICANTS, HORMONES, MEDICINE, ETC., AND YOU’VE GOT A PROBLEM.
AND TAR SANDS ARE ABOUT AS DUMB AN IDEA AS I HAVE SEEN. THIS ACTIVITY CAUSES TREMENDOUS POLLUTION TEARING UP THE LAND, EXPOSING THE PREVIOUSLY LOCKED IN PETRO ORGANICS TO THE ATMOSPHERE. THE VOLATILE PARTS WITHIN THE TAR EVAPORATE INTO THE ATMOSPHERE CAUSING MAJOR LEAGUE ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION. SO, YOU HAVE AIR POLLUTION COUPLED WITH A RAPED LANDSCAPE THAT WOULD MAKE AN OHIO STRIP MINE LOOK LIKE THE GARDEN OF EDEN. ON TOP OF THAT, YOU ARE BURNING TREMENDOUS AMOUNTS OF FOSSIL FUEL, TO EXTRACT FOSSIL FUEL, THUS CAUSING MORE TOXIC POLLUTION IN THE ATMOSPHERE. AND IT TAKES SO MUCH ENERGY TO SEPARATE THE TAR FROM THE SAND, YOU ONLY GET ABOUT 1.3 GALLONS OF REFINEABLE PETROCHEMICALS PER 1 GALLON NEEDED TO GET TO THE POINT OF REFINING. NOT MUCH OF A NET GAIN, WHEN CONSIDERING THE ENVIRONMENTAL DESTRUCTION. THROW IN REMEDIATION COSTS AND ENERGY EXPENDED FOR THAT, AND THE RATIO IS PROBABLY THE OPPOSITE. YOU LOSE BY GAINING.
ARROGANCE AND HUBRIS IS PRECISELY WHY PRIOR CIVILIZATIONS COLLAPSED. THEY REFUSED TO BELIEVE THAT FAILURE COULD HAPPEN TO US. WITNESS THE U.S. ECONOMY, CIRCA 2012.
THE CONCENTRATION OF POLITICAL POWER AT THE APEX OF THE SOCIO ECONOMIC FOOD CHAIN. THAT IS WHY BIG OIL, BIG PHARMA, BIG INSURANCE, BIG MEDICINE, BIG AGRIBUSINESS, ETC., ARE GETTING THEIR WAY. JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES AND KEEP SAYING THIS ISN’T TRUE; IT ISN’T HAPPENING. THEN OPEN YOUR EYES. REALITY DIDN’T GO AWAY. GET ACTIVE. TAKE ACTION.

Time to boycott Canadian products! Enough is enough. The tar sands alone are going to destroy this planet. It puts out as much carbon as 38 million cars per day. Climate change is accelerating in part because of this. And now poisoning wolves on top of it. For shame, Canada.

As gas prices rise to more sustainable rates to make up for high fracking costs, renewables become more competitive. There's no way around it- once you honestly factor in all the costs, renewable energy makes both environmental and economic sense!
Thanks for this very useful analysis!

Josh, you know that Mary and I have many reasons to be angry. Our water well, home, property, the worse was Mary's total health eyes, mind, hearing, walking, living in fear, our income ruined hoophouse gone. Thanks to a local corrupt government You were arrested hand cuffed and led to jail, this act brought great anger to us.
The old world war two veteran who set on our front deck and viewed all that had been done to us, with tears in his eyes, said and this is what we fought world war two for?
He picked up his cane and left we never saw him again, his death was soon after.
Better that he never saw the removal of freedom of the press and our best locked away like a common criminal. Jack

I'm trying to find unbiased information regarding fracking, but it all seems to come from people or organizations who have built-in or funded biases. It's nice to see that you have hot links to the sources of your statements, but they all seem to come from even more biases sources.
You make one statement that I believe is wrong and for which you provide no source of information. What is the foundation of your statement that... "Fracking operations have generated billions of gallons of radiation-laced toxic wastewater..." Your use of the term Radiation-laced with no substantiation, either shows your ignorance, or your obvious bias.
