Thanks for the article Megan. According to at least one of Chu's coworkers from Berkely Labs, Chu is definitely aware of Peak Oil. But he is a bureaucrat now, so he must tow the line for his boss. However, there is a considerable difference economically between higher gasoline prices because of extra taxes like in Europe, and higher commodity cost.
Higher gasoline taxes provide revenue for the government, which it then provides services to it's citizens with. All else being equal, other taxes should therefore be less. It's a wash monetarily, but would serve to lower gasoline demand. A government can get away with this if they can make clear to their citizens that the tax revenue is spent mostly to provides services that directly offset the private transportation loss, such as in exemplary public transportation systems. On the other hand, higher commodity cost are not a wash and provide no new services. Not only do we pay more at the pump, but so does the government, and it provides no new services and little in the way of tax revenue. It is a net loss to productive capacity. They are watching the foundation of their empire erode before their very eyes. Of course they want lower prices.
The captains of industry dislike both taxes and high commodity prices. They would benefit the least from public transportation work, and see both as increasing the cost of doing business. Their response, because of their maniacal focus on profits, would be to layoff more workers. Oops, there goes the economy again. I don't really have a "solution" for this conundrum, other than to make ourselves less dependent individually on industrial support services.

Both the Mayor of Cleveland and Governor Strickland ok'd the offshore Wind Turbines! The testing shows no pollution or wastes from Wind Turbines, Plus, the fish actually like them and use the turbines as an oasis or reef.
So where are they? Where are the 10's of thousands of jobs they will provide the area in Manufacturing, deliveries, building, and maintaining them? We have the factories and the manpower!! Are we going to let this slip through our fingers like the statewide trains??? We need a Governor who wants to help Cleveland, Ohio and it's surrounding suburbs - not hinder us!
Bring on the future with clean energy! The future is now!
I f Japan had Wind Turbines for energy they could of shut down the Nuclear Power plants safely when every other means failed! We have 2 such power plants on the Lake shore at each end!

I'm appreciative of Friends of the Earth for looking out for California and downwinders of California.
Nuclear energy has never been safe and never can be.
This has been known for decades.
If you have any doubts about the dangers of nuclear energy, this free on-line book is a MUST read:

After the Clean Water Act was enacted in 1972, conditions in Lake Erie improved dramatically until the mid 1990s. I don't believe it's merely a coincidence that the resurgence of phosphorus overload occurred at virtually the same time hundreds of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations began applying liquid manure at high rates to tiled fields in Southeast Michigan and Northwest Ohio. Although manure runoff is suspected as one of the major sources of the phosphorus that feeds the algae blooms, Ohio has failed to set nutrient pollution standards or to regulate industrial animal operations (CAFOs) as required under the Clean Water Act. CAFOs are some of the largest sources of nutrient pollution in waterways, producing millions of gallons and megatons of manure on a single site. Unlike regulated industries, CAFOs are permitted to land apply massive amounts of untreated nutrient-rich waste directly onto tiled farm fields. The Ohio Department of Agriculture routinely approves CAFO permits with insufficient acreage upon which to spread the massive amounts of manure. In the face of the current nutrient crisis, the ODA and other State agencies are merely recommending “voluntary” measures to reduce nutrient runoff. Without meaningful regulations and nutrient standards, I believe some CAFOs will still use farm fields as toilets and our lakes as septic tanks. The time has come to stop the pollution; not find ways around it or cover it up.

Alert: The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has a current comment period on a Programmatic Env. Impact Statement for seismic testing (and test drilling) for the Atlantic Offshore Continental Shelf (DE, MD, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL). Holding one hearing per state and accepting written comments for 60 days post Federal Register notice of 3/30/12 (so deadline May 29th(?).
More info re the 2012-2017 oil and gas program (mostly about Gulf of Mexico and Arctic seas at the linkc.but it explains that they are authorising exploration precisely because no-one is sure what's actually out there), so which I plan to say why should we further harm marine mammals (and fish) not to mention actually drill out there for something we can't reasonably expect to use, i.e. more fossil fuels!!!! And yeah, it also seems to say, industry pressure is on them...
The PEIS has lots of info on environmental impact on marine species supposedly but I'm not competent to critique it really.

This is whale and dolphin territory, also turtles.

Obviously there is no limit to the lengths these greedy and callous people will go in their efforts to make a quick buck!
They don't give a damn if they poison the whole population and even cause the destruction of the planet.
If they fire the San Andreas fault, for example, and half the City slides under the sea all they have to do is go bust and avoid retribution. People can scream and shout all they want afterwards it won't bring back the lost!
They will just give governments a bribe and they can do whatever they like.

YOU ARE MISSING THE BIG PICTURE. GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE IS THE REAL CULPRIT HERE. EVEN IF YOU STOP DESTRUCTIVE FARMING PRACTICES COMPLETELY, AND ELIMINATE THE PHOSPHATE AND NITROGEN LOADING FROM RUNOFF, YOU WILL STILL HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM. WHY? GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE! YOU SEE, FOR 200 YEARS, NITROGEN AND PHOSPHATES HAVE BEEN APPLIED TO FARM FIELDS AS FERTILIZER AND RUNNING OFF OF FIELDS INTO LAKE ERIE DURING HEAVY RAINS. WHEN THESE NUTRIENTS RUN OFF INTO THE LAKE, MUCH OF THE PHOSPHATES AND NITROGEN SETTLE INTO SEDIMENTARY DEPOSITS AND THUS BECOME SEQUESTERED UNDER LAYERS OF NEW SEDIMENT. SO, THE SEDIMENTS NORMALLY WOULD CONTAIN 200 YEARS OF SEQUESTERED PHOSPHATE AND NITROGEN LOADING. ENTER GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE. THIS PHENOMENON PRODUCES MORE FREQUENT STORMS, AND THOSE STORMS ARE MUCH MORE VIOLENT WHEN THEY DO OCCUR, DUE TO THE HEAT ENERGY IN THE ATMOSPHERE ATTRIBUTABLE TO GLOBAL WARMING FROM TOO MUCH CO2 IN THE ATMOSPHERE DUE TO THE BURNING OF FOSSIL FUEL TO GENERATE OUR ENERGY NEEDS. WITH MORE FREQUENT AND MORE VIOLENT STORMS, THE ENERGY PRODUCES MUCH LARGER WAVES AND THESE WAVES REACH FAR DEEPER INTO THE WATER COLUMN. SINCE LAKE ERIE IS A VERY SHALLOW BODY OF WATER, THE EDDIES FROM THE WAVES PRODUCED DURING THESE VIOLENT STORMS REACH DEEP INTO THE SEDIMENTS AND CHURN THEM UP, THUS STIRRING THE SEDIMENTS AND RELEASING THE PREVIOUSLY SEQUESTERED NUTRIENTS BACK UP INTO THE WATER COLUMN WHERE THE ALGAE CAN USE THEM FOR GROWTH. THUS, GLOBAL WARMING HAS UNLEASHED 200 YEARS OF PREVIOUSLY SEQUESTERED NUTRIENTS WHEN EACH VIOLENT STORM OCCURS. ADD SUNLIGHT AND "BOOM". YOU GET AN EXPLOSION OF ALGAE GROWTH. THIS PROCESS WILL CONTINUE AS LONG AS GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE CONTINUES TO PRODUCE THESE MORE FREQUENT VIOLENT STORMS. AND THE PROBLEM WILL GET WORSE BECAUSE THE ALGAE DIE OFF, SETTLE TO THE BOTTOM AND ADD MORE NUTRIENTS TO THE SEDIMENTARY LAYER. THESE ALSO GET CHURNED BACK UP INTO THE SUN ZONE DURING A STORM WHICH ALLOWS NEW ALGAE TO GROW PROLIFICALLY. WE HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT MIGHT NOT BE SOLVED SIMPLY BY STOPPING THE APPLICATION OF FERTILIZER TO TERRA FERMA. WHAT SAYETH THE AUDIENCE??????

The horror of hard radiation does not discourage the devotees of nuclear power. Hard economics does. Nukes are simply too costly to build today, forget about the clean up after the next disaster tomorrow. Without massive subsidies and insurance bailouts. no profit minded investor would finance construction. Follow the money. Push for switch of subsidies to green power.

This subsidizing of the nuke industry is unbelievable in a country that trashes socialism and continues to proudly boast of its capitalist system. Where is the social value in forcing Americans to pay for inevitable timebombs in our own backyard. Thank you folks who sign this petition. Read the kind of environmental investigative reporting on Fukushima fallout in North America missing from mainstream media at our site, EnviroReporter.com.

Feeding the planet should not be this complicated. This is the result of Big industry working with lazy, corrupt or ignorant government officials. Unfortunately the food issue is global and not restricted by borders so everyone should get off their duffs and get active. Back to victory gardens and local produce.

Maybe this is another reason the bees are dying. Farmers in the fruit industry are having to hand pollinate their fruit trees because there are no bees. Pesticides seemed to be a panacea when we here young and ignorant. NO excuses NOW! And what is the overuse of pesticides doing to the health of the workers? China has not yet begun to care about collateral damage.

Bravo Michael! excellent article about the beginnings of the atomic legacy and the endings we are about to face in its deadly path ... helen said we have 3 choices... 1) get rid of nuclear weapons worldwide; 2) get rid of nuclear power; and 3) begin a nuclear free energy policy that employs alternative energy sources such as solar and wind. We must be kind to each other and to the earth we live and leave behind. peace out, laura.

You are absolutely right! Everyone is much too blindly accepting to industrial manufacturing of products full of chemical contamanants. Absurdly true, you can smell the stuff when you walk into a store. It matters, and it is commonly accepted as a community service.

The government's largess for coal and nuclear seems to be limitless. It is time for these dangerous and polluting industries to make it in the private sector or not make it at all. From Price Anderson to the @007 and 2009 Acts of Congress, these subsidies should stop and stop now.

Dear Bob, I have absolutely no ties to the oil, gas, energy, or any industry whatsoever...I am a "concerned citizen" who works in the human services domain, and who cannot stand people trying to inflame others with partisanism's. I am not making a "partisan criticism," this so-called article does. So this guy works for an oil lobby. This article portrays him as evil. If an environmental lobbyist made a large salary with a large PR budget and was thanked by Michelle Obama, should they be vilified? I think not, and I, for one, am tired of letting any such attacks go unchallenged. Why don't we talk TO each other and not ABOUT each other? And, if we do, perhaps we can see that neither side is as evil as the rhetoric tries to portray.

It has been a long time since I have read something so absent of facts as this article. You simply state what you wish to be true as if that makes it true. Your implication that the lack of federal jurisdiction for some pipelines means that they aren't regulated is also (probably intentionally) misleading.
It is laughable that you include in your mission that you are a "neutral" platform. You are as biased as they come.

This is becoming an issue in the UK. The only information we have regarding risks is coming from the USA and it all looks alarming. This method is either new to the UK or it has only just appeared on the 'serious concerns radar'. I am expecting evidence to emerge of similar problems. There was recently a small, localised, tremor in North West England that may be attributable to this. The message from the UK Government is that this has proven safe in the USA.

There are a lot of smart people in the environmental movement. I wish they would use their intelligence to offer sustainable commercial solutions instead of just saying "no", so maybe commercial interests will consider them. Commercial interests are stuck in their ways because they work and are profitable, but might not be sustainable. So study alternatives and offer them. Maybe, just maybe, a satisfactory and sustainable solution can be found beyond just saying "no".

No or, but decidedly the case is that "Chu thinks Americans are too dumb to understand that in the long run they would be better off with higher fuel prices."
Like most politicians, Obama is kowtowing to the lowest common denominator and the since he's a lawyer, he's working for his clients (Exxon, BP, Shell, etc.)

Other than the fact that some people will make lots of money in the process, fracking is a potential disaster at a spectrum of levels, local-community and global. The most basic folly of the whole process in the first place is that is does NOT result in an energy dynamic that decreases global warming gases emitted into the atmosphere. This is the most important aspect of why we cannot allow the energy companies to thrust this process on our communities and their commons. We have to move full speed ahead with all of our useful resources into sustainable, safe, efficient, clean energy production such as wind, solar, geothermal, tidal, and anything local, local, local that we can create. We have to STOP BURNING and exhausting fuels into the atmosphere. It is that simple! People power must dis-enfranchise the oiluminati.

Commercial lillies can be grown without pesticide runoff and emissions.
This costs more, for sure, but we owe it to our rivers to make sure that cheap flowers for our homes don't threaten the viability of any native ecosystem -- our larger home! And we owe support to the regulators who work to protect those larger homes.

How about this idea to help wake people up:
CALL FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY SATIRE VIDEOS!
$100 for each of the first five videos selected
$25 for additional videos selected
DEADLINE: JUNE 30, 2012
More and more people realize that we have to move away from fossil fuels and
towards renewable energy in order to stop damaging our climate and our planet and
our future. However, we are not speaking out loudly enough to encourage investment
in new beneficial technologies, and specially wind power. False arguments are raised
against the development of our plentiful wind resources.
Laughter doesn't just make us happy - it connects and energizes us. If you go to
http://windustrious.org you will see links to some very funny videos. The targets of
these pieces of satire are the opponents, and delayers, of our transition to wind
power and other forms of renewable energy. The videos make us see how silly the
opposition really is!
This is a call for additional satire videos for the Windustrious.org website. They will
help build the call for action in fighting climate change. Suggestions of subject
matter are listed below the three movies already on display. You may be able to
think of other scenarios worthy of ridicule.
The duration of the videos should be from 30 seconds to 5 minutes in length and in
DVD data format. Please include contact information including: your name, phone
number, email address and street address with your submission. More than one
video may be submitted. Submissions should be mailed to:
Sarah Taylor, Windustrious, 2894 Meadowbrook Blvd, Cleveland Heights, OH 44118.
$100 will be paid for each of the first five videos put up on the Windustrious site,
with authorship acknowledged. The authors of additional videos added to the site will
each receive $25. The deadline for video submission is June 30th, 2012.

Fipronil, a common relative of these pesticides, is used in topical flea preparations, namely Frontline.
USGS found this in water. Here's an excerpt:
Fipronil Highly effective, broad spectrum insecticide. Frequently used for cockroach and ant control as well as for pests of field corn, golf courses and commercial turf.[17] Possible carcinogen, potential ground water contaminant and suspected endocrine disruptor.[18] In 2004, Louisiana crawfish farmers and landowners who had suffered severe losses due to ICON contamination (of which fipronil is the active ingredient) received US$45 million in a class action settlement.[19]
Found by POICS in Ag wastewater
Alvarez et al. 2007 J. Environ. Qual. IN PRESS
Page 12
There should be a campaign against these, maybe alert to vets and pet stores?
Thanks,
Ken

You are right, they are murderers, but if you don't help to expose the truth, nobody will take you seriously. If you really care, which I do, you will read this and help expose it for what it is. I worked for BP, I know:
- The media is grossly censoring the extent of the devastation in the Gulf. The poisons--oil and chemical dispersant (Corexit)--are destined to spread globally, but honest reporting is restricted, and independent investigators are being arrested. This censorship is a sure sign of fascism--not freedom or democracy. In this way, the media, financially directed by leading investment bankers, accomplices this global poisoning, or omnicide.
- The news and network "programming" is propaganda issued by the "partners" in the Rothschild League of Banks including Goldman-Sachs, JPMorgan-Chase and UBS that direct BP, Transocean, Halliburton, the clean-up capitalists, Corexit suppliers, even the trailers used by clean-up crews, through co-investors heavily represented in the Partnership for New York City (PFNYC), founded by David Rockefeller and chartered by the Royal Family of England. All together, these partners wield the most formidable economic power in world history.
- Ongoing worsening environmental pollution has been a primary objective of these Rothschild League financiers since at least the 1960s, according to their leaked economic agenda. http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/sociopolitica/esp_sociopol_ironmountain08.htm
- The Deepwater Horizon (Mississippi Canyon 252) oil rig that exploded is the property of Transocean, not British Petroleum (BP); and both companies are financially directed by Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, and UBS investment bankers, all operating in the Rothschild League of banks.
- Coincidentally, or demonically, the oil rig's failed cementation job exploded on Hitler's birthday, just in time to poison Earth Day 2010, thanks to Transocean's contractor--the infamous Dick Cheney/George Bush officiated Halliburton Company allied with Homeland Security.
- Halliburton officials admit knowing their cementation job was likely to explode just when it did, according to Congressional testimony.
- Goldman Sachs (GS) officials, likewise, knew the rig was likely to explode when it did. They bet millions of dollars on this event only days before it happened! (Lloyd Blankfein, CEO of GS, directed 44% (4.6 million shares) of BP stock to be dumped three weeks before the explosion.
- Not surprisingly, Transocean was merged into its current corporate state by Goldman-Sachs (a.k.a., "Government Sachs") in 2007.
- David Sidwell, Risk Committee Chairman of UBS, the wealthiest Swiss bank (in the Rothschild League or alliance of so-called "competing" banks) and the world's largest wealth manager, also dumped BP stocks massively (i.e., 99% of the banks holdings, or 2.1 million shares,) as did Wachovia/Wells Fargo.
- BP Oil CEO Tony Hayward sold 1/3 of his BP stock (223,288 shares) on March 17--a month before the explosion.
- Just prior to 9/11, you may recall, Goldman Sachs did the same with airline stocks; and before the Gulf catastrophe, GS shorted mortgage company stocks, fueling the real estate collapse in America.
- The Management Boards of the Eurex Stock Exchanges and the Executive Board of Germany's Eurex Clearing AG decided, on April 14, 2010, to introduce an equity option on shares of Transocean Ltd, effective on the day of the explosion, April 20, 2010. This gave inside traders a full day to dump their "uninsured" stock in Transocean at the highest price possible (before the rest of Wall Street responded to the explosion). Then the crisis capitalists were able to reinvest their funds securing the higher price value.
These officials published zero reason for Transocean's new equity option program that encouraged banking criminals to use "protective puts" to make millions.
- In other words, by paying a relatively small premium (compared to the soon-to-be plunging market value of Transocean stock), the Rothschild Leaguers knew no matter how far the stock dropped, it could be sold at the original "strike price" (also called the "put option") anytime before April 20, 2012.
- This additionally evidences premeditated murder, and the financial motives of the Swiss/German banking chiefs influencing Europe's most active stock exchanges. These inside traitors and industrial sabateurs, financially controlling Transocean, Halliburton, and BP, committed the gravest environmental crime of all time, with obvious plans to profit from the mass murdering of people and destruction of the Gulf.
- This was how money was made from the obvious sabotage. After UBS sold its 2.1 million shares of BP, prior to the explosion, the "put option" policy on BP stock was similarly exercised when UBS bought back 8.6 million BP shares by June 7.
- Transocean Vice President of Marketing, Terry Bonno, met UBS officials on May 27, 2010, according to a heavily censored Thompson Reuter's report and transcript. http://www.alacrastore.com/research/thomson-streetevents-Transocean_LTD_at_UBS_Global_Oil_and_Gas_Conference-T3111942
- So within weeks of the explosion the Rothschild League of investment bankers were yelling "Buy! Buy! Buy! BP stock," stating the costs for clean-up were miniscule compared to what their investments and company profits would earn.
- This quote detailed the BP-banking-stock-jocks' plot: "Buying shares today while writing $55 calls and "puts" for the January 2012 expiration allows for an outstanding cash-on-cash return if BP merely bounces back by 14% over the next 21 months. In a best case you'll net 98% total returns on the actual cash outlay (assuming you write the puts against paid-up marginable equity already held in your margin-type account)."
- Much like the instantly manufactured equity investment option created for Transocean right before the explosion, BP's stock insurance plan secured the ongoing devastation in the Gulf with this financial promise: "In a worst case scenario you'll end up with twice the number of BP ADRs at an average cost of $42.64 or less," stock gurus promoted. "That's lower than the annual lows for BP during the entire period 2004 right through 2007."
- The wizards of oil, pulling the strings behind the media's propaganda, are best exemplified by Goldman Sachs's CEO, Lloyd Blankfein. Lloyd merged, and still largely controls, ABC/Disney and Miramax. Blankfein's partner, co-chairing the PFNYC, is Rupert Murdoch, controlling FOX News, Time-Warner, Associated Press, News Corp and much more. Another partner in this David Rockefeller-founded PFNYC cabal is Thompson Reuters chairman, Thomas Glocer. The PFNYC was responsible for financial reconciliations from 9-11, and "veering" World Trade Center reconstruction money from New York to Las Vegas through Apollo Management's MGM private equity investments. (Apollo co-owns Nalco/Corexit with Goldman Sachs.) The PFNYC was chartered by Britain's Royal family, bringing NBC/Comcast into their stead, as well as the General Electric company. Last but not least, CBS owner, Sumner Murray Rothstein (Redstone), joined the clique through his CBS-Viacom stable of companies.
- The Halliburton cementation job's sabotage, and resulting oil hemorrhage in the Gulf, served perfectly, synchronously and financially, to "veer" media attention away from Lloyd Blankfein's/ Goldman-Sachs's shorting of the American housing market, accelerating the planned economic collapse of the USA for the forthcoming New World Order's "New Deal."
- And just when we thought the Government Sachs connection to the Gulf oil rigging could not get any deeper, we learn that GS holds controlling interests (with Apollo Management) in the Nalco Company which produces the hideously deadly oil dispersant named Corexit!
- The Rothschild Leaguers "ruled out all [Corexit] competitors even those that have shown to be far less toxic and, in some cases, nearly twice as effective," reported Paul Quinlan in the New York Times. The reason being . . .
Nalco formed from a joint venture with the David Rockefeller-controlled Exxon Chemical Co. in 1994. Then in 2003, The Blackstone Group, Apollo Management L.P., and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners, bought Ondeo Nalco for $4.3 billon dollars. All three companies are partnered in the Rockefeller-founded, Royal Family-chartered PFNYC.
- The George Bush/Dick Cheney 9/11-linked Halliburton Company purchased the world's largest oil-spill cleanup entity, Boots & Coots, three weeks before the explosion. This was synchrounous with the bankers beginning to unload BP and Transocean stocks, and securing equity options to insure their investments. Other major shareholders in Nalco/Corexit include billionaire Warren Buffett and his conglomerate holding company, Berkshire Hathaway; Maurice Strong, Al Gore, George Soros.
- Homeland Security's choice of accommodations for Gulf oil clean-up crews are the same toxic trailers banned from use during Hurricane Katrina.
- Corexit was found poisoning clean-up workers, causing kidney and liver disorders, following its debut in the 1989 Exxon-Valdez disaster. Nalco blamed these problems on 2-butoxyethanol, now claimed to have been removed.
- This is also one of the chemicals used in chemtrails.

Excellent eye opening article to this unregulated industry. Here in Colorado we are fighting this happening on top of our homes and schools. We have no say. We have no rights to stop any of it or have disclosure. The game has to change if operators want to continue.

Bill...why ban something until it is PROVEN safe, if it hasn't been PROVEN unsafe either?
I appreciate the claims as mentioned above, but I sure as heck don't trust the same federal government who's regulatory czar is still Cas Sunsustein!

Thank you for this article! There wouldn't be such a public outcry and concern if we felt safe. Our government agencies are not able to regulate and enforce safe practices. That's why there is also a large segment of the population calling for a ban until it can be PROVEN safe and responsibly monitored. We the people know that if we don't sound the alarm and raise awareness of the dangers, the industry, state and federal agencies responsible for protecting us will continue business as usual and allow indiscriminate destruction of our lands, resources and communities.

From 1993 to March 2012, Japan just spent 23B on new enrichment processes. They see how important clean energy is. They will bounce back from Fukushima with safer and better nuclear energy. Where will you get your energy?

So Geoff...where will USA get energy? NO solutions and NO Truths?? You write like a lying Harvard Lawyer trying to win a case at all cost. Geoff. How do you live with yourself? Like I have said before be proactive and positive with something once in you life. How about you go to work on nuclear waste storage in Yucca? USA is getting torched by China. They are way ahead of us on economy and soon military. Clearly the only reliable safe and economical energy source is LEU uranium. If USA does not make our own LEU uranium it will be imported with loss of jobs and technology.....like every other piece of junk coming from China. So yes if you want to go to 2nd world nation status keep on trashing USA.

There is an article in the Plain Dealer today about the increase in lobyists for the gas and oil industry, particularly Cheasepeake. They are giving huge amounts of money to legislators. What can simple farmers do? The guys are swarming around signing up leases on land for fracking. They won't get a lease on our land, but we will still be affected by others.

Lets hope there is greater public awareness and public education so that industry and government don't blindly go ahead unchecked and destroy the planet acre by acre when research into new energy sources - some already discovered - can be the solution. Those with the power and money are generally only intent on keeping it. Burning off gas when supposedly it is a rare resource we must ravage the environment for just makes no sense at all. It is archaic and underscores the lack of concern and interest in modifying or modernizing. Investors in these companies need to speak up and hold the corporations accountable. It is unconscionable not to.

It is unconscionable not to.

All of us "investors" of life need to write a statement against the countless hazards of this criminal industrialization of civilization. We all invest in life each day through a healthy diet, exercise, spirituality, choices, respect, compassion, and caring for our family, friends, strangers, and our enemies. Our investment is the meaning of life and has endless eternal worth, beyond anything financial. It is sacred and boundless. Billions of people right now are our investors...write a statement today for us all and send it to any leader you wish...local, state, national, world, universe.

I do not think that we should do hydro fracking at any time in NEW YORK STATE. THE LAKES THERE ARE TREASURES WHERE WE'D FISH and swim and do a host of other things as well. The gas companies nave to stop demanding to drill because it isn't acceptable at all. It pollutes as there are chemicals and lots of bad odors as well as waste water galore. We do not want any of that and we also don[t want them to frack with our water

I have never been in favor of Nuclear Power for all the reasons you have stated. It is too expensive, monitarily as well as environmentally. Immediate gratification has always been what is at the forefront of all or our energy projects with the consequences realized many years later, when it's too late. When it's too late for the nuclear waste as well as the power/water required to operate safely, the consequences cannot be reversed. We all are at risk. If I had to choose between our current energy providing options I would only opt for oil drilling (on land) until we develope safe alternatives.

The harm done to the Earth by nuclear power is beyond estimation. The nuclear fire once lit never dies and its tentacles poison everything. Never in the history of energy production has so destructive and demonic a force been unleashed on an unsuspecting public.
Closing all nuclear reactors is just the beginning and dealing with nuclear wastes is now the burden of all present and future generations. Nuclear accidents have created ghostly and uninhabitable wastelands everywhere, where the idea of evacuation is a sick and meaningless joke. It is more truthful to say "lost forever." Who was ever told that an energy source could destroy the genetic memory of the human race? Who would even consider such an idea? Those responsible for this unending tragedy continue on without a shred of remorse for what they have unleashed. There is, unfortunately, no court of law no judge or jury in existence that will indict the guilty whose work has produced a nuclear and pandemic of unimaginable proportions. The costs of nuclear power cannot even by quantified. No accountant's balance sheet even exists to accurately assess the damage to all living things that is the eternal evil that is nuclear power.

I wonder why GM proponents have jumped to this technology before we exploit the current gene pool and genotypes to their limits of potential. In addition to this, the World is already talking of synthetic DNA! I know and appreciate that we must always stay ahead of eventualities and that we must not fire fight but always be prepared to offer new food products from our gene back stores for human and animal consumption BUT I am now wondering as to what the ethical limits to this will be.

Coal ash needs to include "waste coal ash." The state of Pennsylvania differentiates between fly ash (coal ash) and waste coal ash.Waste coal ash refers to ash created from burning waste coal, a standard practice at 18 or more generating plants in Pennsylvania. Waste coal ash is more contaminated than fly ash and is unregulated. The blatant buying the Pennsylvania representatives in the state government. As an Environeer and previous Riverkeeper, I have confronted this issue and have been brushed aside. SUPPORT the EPA in this!!!!

There have always been tarballs on the beaches, I have a 500 year-old pottery shard decorated with tar from the beach. After an oil spill these balls roll around on the bottom and finally wash ashore, sometimes in large numbers. And the "flesh-eating bacteria" is not new, either. The infection is from the bacteria getting in through a cut or sore, generally. It is not common, but it does happen and is serious. If the tar balls contain the bacteria, you should be careful not to step on them especially if you have open wounds or a compromised immune system. Also, the tar is very hard to get off your feet, without some sort of solvent, or at least soap and a lot of scrubbing.

The web of life in the oceans supports the web of life on land, both of which humanity rely on for our survival. As the present political economic model is negligent of protecting and sustaining humanity, should not the destruction of the web of life in the ocean be seen as a crime against life on our planet.
Then comes the next stage, who should be the among the first individual charges with large scale, long term damage of the environment, the proposed 5th crime against peace to be prosecuted by the International Criminal Court.
What scientific evidence were the CEOs and Board of Directors of the American automobile corporations using when they decide to build fleets of Hummers and less fuel efficient SUVs that burned more of the world oil supply and pumped out more climate destabilizing emissions. Were the coal electrical generating corporations using the same fraudulent science. The fraudulent financial accounting at the heart of the sub prime scam and robo mortgage signings continues to wreck the lives of millions. How many lives will climate destabilization and ocean acidification, coral bleaching and dead zones to name a few, harm and cause to be lost. Though this pushes the definition proposed by This is Ecocide. Ocean acidification will cause harm to the oceans web of life and as a result humanity? We need to consider the prosecution of ecocide if we intend to live sustainably. http://thisisecocide.com/ Join the debate we looks forward to your critical analysis and support

C: You would be wrong about that. You may be under the (mistaken) impression that substances only get into the body via the mouth. These (an other substances) get into the body THROUGH THE SKIN (97% penetrance for BP-A) and through the LUNGS (when you run hot water in the shower and it hits the shower curtain, you INHALE the hormone disruptors). When you SIT ON plastic furniture and your skin touches the plastic, you absorb plasticizers.

I just called the Senator Mark Grisanti and left a message with his pleasant secretary. I encourage others to do the same!!
His office # is: (518) 455-3240
Ask for a state-wide ban on fracking. We already know the dangers. We don't need to prolong endangering New York's natural resources and citizens.

First love canal, now the toxic industrial poisioning of subburbs, farmland, and urban land from natural gas production. This is the genocide of america. How many more lessons do we need here? How many more innocent people have to die from reckless greed? Go solar, geothermal, hydro electric, sustainable and clean living.

Tom,, Many thanks for such a truthful piece. I am sure you will get alot of behind the scenes flack about it. People don't like reading the truth. You are so right actions speak much louder than words. Obama does not care about the pipeline states because they are all RepubliCAN'T states anyways so he will never win them thus the votes and people in those state simply do not matter to him, the Campaign and the DNC. It all comes down to votes, contributions and volunteers. That is all that matters to all politicians. As for the Jan 18 press statement by the White House, anyone who thinks that Obama denied the Keystone XL Pipeline is in a serious state of denial. He delayed but he did not deny. Anyone who is shocked by his promotion of the Cushing, OK to Texas Southern Segment simply has not been honest with themselves. Landowners and end of market refinery communities have been sold out for the profit of a foreign corporation and industry that insists on destroying our earth. Tar sands will be mined, shipped and refined for the next 100 years. Add insult to injury - tar sands are shipped via pipeline tax free, refined and exported tax free. US assumes all the risks at what benefits? The sole benefits of Big Oil & Gas who do not pay taxes! Democrats in the path of Keystone XL from the Canadian border to the Texas refineries can send a clear message by not voting for Obama, not contributing dollars and time to the campaign and DNC. We The People are not fooled by any of this and we do have some Power in the voting booth.

How much more proof do we need that change is needed NOW? Common wisdom says that human beings typically fail to take action until the looming, yet preventable, crisis, actuality hits them. The crisis IS here. Superbugs are a major public health hazard. As consumers, we must learn to discriminate what fresh meat (even farmed fish!), dairy and processed food we eat. As citizens, we must demand that our government takes its responsibility protecting public heath by imposing restrictions on an industry that has demonstrated its inability to police itself.
Scam Inc
The American public as well as the global community is again being made aware of the threat that a group that can be described as radical fundamentalist capitalists, will not only rob the nations accounts but also pose a threat to national security, global ecological stability with climate destabilisation as well as subsequently harm human mental, physical and spiritual well being.
How do we address that scam is the difficult question.
The fuel efficiency of vehicles will diminish our dependance on funding their scam.
The transportation of goods is moving to rail
Urban transit
But those avoid the true action that must be taken continuing to subsidize profitable corporations does not make economic sense and threatens US economic prosperity and national security
The insurance industry stands to suffer massive losses due to climate destabilisation so they should be asked what liability the carbon negligent corporations will face for failing to address with due diligence if not sabotaging our efforts to live sustainably.

The goverment for the most part cannot be trusted to protect our interest, there are to many people makiing too much money and those people are in turn paying too many bureaucrats to either look the other way or just outright oppose any action or measure taken to protect the public, because "the goverment shouldn't be allowed to interfere with the way companies do business in pursuit of profits" (except of course when those same companies get to big to fail and their greed makes it necssary for the same people they're trying to make pay for being poisoned to bail them out) The only recourse we the people who are aware of whats going on have is to stop buying this poison and not only take advantage of the alternatives but help the folke who are engaged in providing them to grow and protect themselves for corporate takeovers. Our health and survival and that of our children depend on it, because the corporate world is getting smaller and ti is in the best interest of the people who control these entities to keep us sick all in the pursuit of bigger profits. All this hell about health care is not coincidental.

What these people are doing to wolves is very inhumane. However if it was absolutely necisairy...mabey...depending on the situation that you are in. But what they are doing in Alaska is just plain wrong and cruel. When you kill a wolf your not only hurting one animal you are hurting an entire life force that is the animals pack and family. Wolves feel and have emotions just as humans do. I am completely against wolf slaughter and I hope all of you people who read my comment do as well. This is NOT helping the environmet in any way. Wolves keep many populations under control. If wolves were to become extinct many species would spiral out of control, in turn destroying many other populations and disrupting the natural eco-system of Earth.

Well said Tom. What is amazing is that everyone wants a clean, healthy environment, but doing something about it somehow seems too big and scary. For a vast majority action can’t spring out of that desire. It gets stifled by a very deeply embedded set of norms that say, “Don’t rock the boat”; “don’t upset anyone”; “don’t alienate your friends and family”. It is up to us to lead and spread the passion so that others will find their voices and join the thousands who have already pledged to do whatever non-violent action is needed to stop the insanity. Here’s the beauty: they can’t arrest us ALL…not all 12,000 or 15,000 or 20,000. Keep writing and riding!

Fracking is too dangerous, too expensive and not necessary for out energy needs. We need to learn how to reduce our impact on the Earth. Jacobson and Delucchi in the March 2011 issue of Energy Policy and in their article in Scientific American of Nov. 2009, have laid out a plan to transition to renewable energy by 2030 with existing technology and science. What we lack, according to Jacobson and Delluchi is the political will to do so because the politicians are owned by the energy industry.

My 3 year old always got the asthma night cough if I left a plastic toy in her room, and then stopped when I removed it (she was asleep, so it wasn't imagined). We had to rush her to hospital the night I foolishly put a new bookcase in her room. That was 20 years ago, and we've avoided as many chemicals since with amazing results for the whole family. My husband's asthma used to be so bad he couldn't even walk 100m as a teenager, now at nerly 60 he is hale and hearty in great health.

Yes, please continue "research" for the next 3 years, maybe at the point where you decide to cease use of such a deadly product humans will already be turning into genetically modified beings. It will be X-men but backwards, with more disease and deformaties not to mention mental issues.
